7/9/2011 Not Feeling the Change
Sprint races hosted by my team at Long Beach. Was there 7am (should’ve been there at 5:30) ‘till 2pm ish. Did one sprint race at around 1? Used sexwax for the first time and had trouble during changes which sucked because I was row1.
It was a long day.

7/7/2011 Starts and Turns
Start time- 6:15pm ish
End time- 7:30-45 ish?
Paddled with the team. To warm up, we did stationary water changes. Basically you would jump out of the canoe, then climb back in from the water. This is for 9-person races where during a competition, three people on a motor boat would switch places with three people on the six person canoe. Fun stuff. I wouldn’t know though; haven’t done it before. yet
Sat in seat5 which was great. Haven’t been back there in a while. Practiced starts. Gotta get used to using my paddle on a six-man. Hit the side of the canoe A LOT which made me cringe every single clack and when going through wakes I would sometimes lose grip with my top hand. Won’t cut it during crazier conditions.
Did turns to simulate flag turns for this Saturday’s team-hosted race. Switched over to seat1 for a few and it was pretty killer on the left side of my body. Good thing I paddled heavily left side for dragon boat HAHAHAHAHHAHA YEAHHHHH. But still pretty killer.
Oreos and cheez-its after practice. Mmm. Nice to end early too (possibly due to low attendance—24) because I could eat sushi with family. -
7/6/2011 Where Am I?
Start time: around 2:45-3pm?
End time: 6:15pm
I need to write these entries immediately afterward because if not I forget small cool details.
Anyway, I saw a cloud shaped like a middle finger. Not just the finger, but as if someone were flipping me off. Mean cloud.
Hella people out because of the nice weather. Summertime yeahhh.
I paddled past the Jetty and went left, a path I had never really gone far before. While I was out, I saw two girls on a jet ski waving their arms. I wasn’t sure if they were trying to get my attention or boats, possible friends, from afar. I paddled away but they kept waving. What seemed like forever, I went out to them and apparently they couldn’t start their jet ski. I didn’t know what to do and just… circled around them, like a shark.. or a creeper. Eventually their friends came on jet skis and I just paddled away. That was awkward.
As I kept paddling, I saw people jumping off cliffs. I was jealous.
I kept going and didn’t know where I was. Here is an approximation of my trip:
Either went to the blue or orange dot. As for where I saw the jet ski girls, it was probably between the blue dot and the angle where the two red lines meet at the left. A fourth of the distance from the left. I already saved the above picture and uploaded it as is and I am too lazy to edit it. Gonna go further than the orange dot sometime in the future.
[edit] Damn, I forgot to include a scale on the map. Too lazy to edit. Look at previous post with picture. Too lazy to hyperlink. But not lazy enough to make this edit. Chyeah.

7/3/2011 Broken
Start time: 9:00am ish
End time: 11:45am ish
Did a quick buoy run (using a quieter, private shortcut) and chilled with the sleeping seals. The weather was great but I felt terrible. Back was sore from lifting and I took WAY more breaks than usual.
So so paddling day. Gotta eat better and take care of my body. -
Haven’t been paddling for a while. I’ve been spending a lot of time with Miguel (my roommate) because he was moving out and I’m still sore from heavy lifting recently. Plus work/class takes up too much time and the sun is too lazy to stay awake the entire night.
But all I hear are excuses.
Hopefullytomorrow. -
Shoulders
are super sunburnt from yesterday. I suck at applying sunblock. Don’t touch me.

6/25/2011 Pushing the Limits
There was a race today in San Diego scheduled for early morning. I overslept and attempted to drive as fast as possible to arrive on time. Cut down the drive to about an hour but I showed up right when the race started, which meant that the boats were already out and ready to go. In defeat and sadness, I drove back to Irvine. I completely let down my team plus I made a round trip to SD for nothing.
To vent in frustration, I went to Newport to paddle. Initially I was just going to do a quick buoy run, but I ended up paddling further than I have gone before, spending a large majority of the time in the open water past the Jetty (that weird thin line to the left of the Corona Del Mar State Beach on the bottom right). I planned to stop at the pier next to Peninsula Park but ended up going over to the Newport Pier at Point B on the map. By the time I got back, four hours had gone by… I used a ruler to calculate the distance and came up with approximately 17 miles total (A to B back to A).
Start time: 11:00am
End time: 3:00pm
The weather was amazing. Nice and warm with calm breezes, perfect condition to just cruise and attempt to ride waves. It was my first time trying to fly the ama but I was really conservative especially through rocky waters; I DID NOT WANT TO HULI. I was dead exhausted when I finished but it was damn worth it. Next time I’d like to paddle even further. Biggest problem every time is the time commitment, but that can be tackled with more training to up my power and speed. Cheers to getting stronger.

6/23/2011 First Team Practice in a Long Time
Start time: around 6:00pm
End time: around 7:50pm
First time out with the team in a long time (three weeks-ish?). Haven’t been going out largely due to finals, graduation, and home. It was the first time using my paddle (51” Axel II) in a OC6 setting. Struggled to adapt throughout practice because I am accustomed to using a shorter paddle.
Did some time sets and other stuff. All in preparation for the San Diego race Saturday 6/25. Overall, pretty good practice but don’t remember much. Cheez-its and Oreos after practice :D. -
6/22/2011 Hungry for POWER
Start time: around 5:00pm
End time: around 7:30pm
There were Power Bars on sale at Albertsons so I decided to buy three. Chocolate, cookies and cream, and chocolate peanut butter. I normally don’t eat them but I wanted to see if it would really affect my performance. Ate half the chocolate since it was the most common flavor (later ate the other half on the trip back). Throughout the trip I never felt that tired while exerting a good portion of power. Good stuff, tasted great.
I saw a flock of birds flying in a perfect V formation. As they got closer above me, one of the middle birds to the side started getting lazy or something because it slowed down affecting those behind it, messing up the formation. They started to look like a lopsided W. Probably got a beating when it returned home. “I AM DISAPPOINT.”
My main goal of the day was to circle around a buoy (henceforth referred to as the La-Z Buoy) located past the Jetty. Seals like to lounge and sleep on it plus it’s a good distance in the middle of the ocean. As mentioned in the introductory post, I don’t bring any source of time so I never know how long it takes to reach a certain location. However, I estimate that it takes approximately 45-60 minutes to get to the La-Z Buoy at least for myself in a one-person canoe going at a leisurely race pace. I have definitely felt my body grow stronger; getting to the buoy has been getting easier and easier each time I’ve been going out.
When I got to the open ocean and halfway to the buoy, the waves got really rocky and I started getting close calls of flipping over (huli-ing) so I turned back. I got to calmer water and chilled but then I regretted the decision. TURNED BACK AND OWNED IT YEAHHH. Felt like it took forever though because I kept weaving around, a newbie to the harsh waters controlled by Poseidon and Aquaman. Totally worth it; didn’t die. 127 Hours… water version.
As I was returning back towards the shore, I saw my adult team’s women’s boats practicing in their six-person canoes going towards where I was leaving. Right amongst them was the head coach paddling in a one person canoe. In an attempt to greet and follow them, I did a quick U-turn and powered as hard as I could to keep up but of no avail largely due to fatigue and having to compete against a canoe filled with people. It was definitely a huge reality check in terms of power difference as the coach looked effortless in following side-by-side with the other boats (granted he had his own custom canoe and mine was raggedy and worn). On a side note, for time trials, the coach had the fastest time. Attempting to follow the boats and failing was a great wake-up call for me to train harder. Gave me something new to work for: being as strong as a six-person crew and the coach, an ex-collegiate rower for UCI whatttttt. BUT I CAN DO IT. I WANT IT. I do it. Get it.
